Health & Wellness Doctors

Whiplash and Motor Vehicle Accident Injury.

Suffering from an auto accident can cause serious injuries that require drastic medical attention. Fortunately, Dr. Mazzarella, Dr. Marek and our team have years of experience with helping auto accident victims return their bodies to health.

Using a combination of advanced rehabilitation techniques and state-of-the-art machinery, combined with chiropractic, acupuncture and proprioceptive rehabilitation our doctors will design a custom rehab program unique for every auto accident victim dependent on their individual risk factors and crash forensics.

While some auto accidents are unavoidable, there are many positive and hopeful solutions for victims. Our goal is not to get you back to pre-injury health, but to get you BETER than pre-injury health.

Understanding Whiplash

Whiplash is a traumatic injury to the neck (cervical spine). After suffering this type of injury a number of additional symptoms can occur which can include, but is not limited to:

  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Back Pain
  • Shoulder Pain
  • Jaw Pain
  • Loss of Concentration
  • Changes in Mood
  • Loss of Short Term Memory

What are Injury Risk Factors?

Did you know that Epidemiological research has shown that there are over 40 risk factors that can mitigate or exacerbate YOUR injury potential. This is based on Biomechanics, Kinematics and Anatomy!

Do you have any of these risk factors? Did your doctor assess for these risk factors?

Chronic Pain Prevention

Did you know, 70% of those injured have pain 15 YEARS after an accident. And if your over 40 years old, that number increased to 95%. Your choice in doctors has a lasting effect on your health.

Understanding How Whiplash Occurs helps to Improve Treatment and Recovery!

Whiplash and Motor Vehicle Accident History: Did you know that Whiplash was first discussed in 1920 during an Orthopaedic Conference in San Francisco. H.E. Crowe described the sound that was associated with the injury as a "whip cracking". Over the course of the next 65 years very little additional research went into understanding the injury mechanism of whiplash. It was only in 1997 that researchers at Yale University Medical School discovered the true injury mechanism associated with whiplash, the reverse S curve (seen below). This was the stepping stone that lead to a wealth of research regarding whiplash in the early 2000's including live full scale human volunteer crash testing (Certified in 2006), and long term pain studies. Today, very few doctors have Whiplash specific training. In fact, there are less than 10 doctors in Canada that have significant Whiplash Traumatology treatment training (see website, www.SRISD.com under graduates listings.). With access to the internet, and a wealth of research regarding injury biomechanics, occupant kinematics, pain presentations and patters, as a patient its your turn to take control of your health. And if you would like, we are here to help you on your way to recovery.

Why simple Neck Pain can Turn Chronic quickly.

Our Whiplash Injury Treatment Program.

Our program is a 12 week physical medicine rehabilitation program that was developed by Dr. Mazzarella and Dr. Marek after taking over 1000 hours of combined Whiplash Traumatology Training and treating over 50,000 motor vehicle trauma patients.

What Sets Us Apart.

Dr. Jason Mazzarella and Dr. Katherine Marek Qualifications.

Certificates of Training:

  • Diplomate Whiplash Traumatology and Treatment
  • Whiplash Traumatology and Treatment
  • Advanced Whiplash Traumatology and Treatment
  • Certification in Motor Vehicle Trauma
  • Certification in Motor Vehicle Crash Forensics Risk Analysis.

Certificates and Certifications above were obtained after taking over 500 hours of post graduate continuing education.

Why Should YOU get Checked out NOW!

In a true whiplash injury, the mechanics of the collision including occupant kinematics, injury biomechanics and risk factors play into a person sustaining an injury. Research shows that about 50% of those involved in motor vehicle accidents sustain injury. If left untreated, a simple injury can turn complex and chronic in a matter of weeks to months. Have a qualified Whiplash Traumatology Doctor evaluate your collision and injuries is the best way to prevent Chronic Pain and Long Term Disability.

Why is a Doctors Post Graduate Training Important?

Doctors obtain a general knowledge basis in medical, chiropractic, physical therapy, or occupational therapy school. Depending on the program, this allows for an in-depth knowledge of anatomy, neurology, biochemistry, system physiology, orthopedic, etc.

Specialty conditions such as Whiplash, Chronic Pain, Brain Injury, Traumatic Stress and Exercise Prescription require additional training as the shear volume of information regarding these subjects is to cumbersome to obtain in a medical program.

The need for specific training is further supported by the authors of the Quebec Task Force on Whiplash Associated Disorders, in which these authors note that specific voluntary post graduate training is required in order to a healthcare provider to accurately diagnosis and treat whiplash.
